Title: five man band

Artist: Katie Howard

Fitness Principles: Teammates, Grit

Description: 'five man band' is a brass quintet based on an adventuring party facing hardships during their journey but coming back together in the end. It consists of a cornet, a trumpet, a French horn, a euphonium, and a tuba. The general sound of this piece is based on brass interludes in works like Holst's St. Paul's Suite Finale: The Dargason. The brass ensemble sound is very full and is a sound that is like no other. A brass quintet playing together is so unapologetically characteristic of the whole brass family. I wanted to take this characteristic sound and create a story about a group of adventurers that face a lot of challenges that try to tear the group apart, but by remembering that they are all working together toward the same goal, the group find their sound again and come together again, ready to face whatever may come their way.

21 Fitness Principles Description: My composition is based on a group of adventurers that work together to overcome the obstacles they face that try to tear them apart. Each of the instruments has its own character they embody, and they can be very different from each other, but they all come together in the end despite their differences and the challenges they face. They are Teammates, they work together, they lift each other up, and ultimately bring out the best in each other. Grit is also shown in them by the instruments working together to build themselves back up after being broken apart. They are not afraid to fail in their adventure because they have their friends with them. Together they can overcome anything.
