Fitness Principles: Consistency
Description: I have been a pianist since I was six, a vocalist since I was nine, and a trombonist since I was ten. Music has long been an integral part of my life. I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of three, so my relationship with music has provided me with a means to comfortably communicate with my community. The comfort that I felt with music eventually led me to begin writing my own pieces. I began writing music during high school and earned my Bachelor of Music degree in music theory and composition at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey.
Currently, I am in the Master of Music program at New Jersey City University as a music composition major. My work focuses on the relationship between disability, music, and how each is refracted through the other. As a musician on the autistic spectrum, I hope to provide meaningful interaction with music for other with disabilities.
21 Fitness Principles Description: The principle of "consistency" holds that daily repetition will eventually legitimize that activity as an important part of our lives. The idea of repetition legitimizing also holds in music as well. This composition features bits of material that loop repeatedly. The first loop is of string chords, which is followed by the introduction of material on the drums, acoustic bass, piano, and horns. This looping material is fundamental to the pieces, similar to how daily repetition of exercise becomes a fundamental part of ourselves the more it is repeated.
Certain material drops out at times to make room for new elements, such as the solos on the trumpet and saxophone. These additional materials are supported by the existing looping material: the strings, drums, and bass. This element reflects how these repetitive actions can support other aspects of health to create a wholistic healthy self.
