Recovery and Resistance
Nicole Schott
Recovery and Resistance are the two fitness principles that gravitate me towards the New Heart for Life Community. Even before I joined the community myself, I also knew someone who had experienced a heart attack and started to work on bettering their health. My dad had experienced a heart attack a few years back, and it was a surprising situation. So surprising, that I only knew about it the next day since it had happened at night! If my mom didn't make sure that my dad was in the hospital, it could be possible that he could have not made it.
After this situation, my dad has been focused on bettering his health through daily walks, meditation, and other methods that will keep his heart happy and healthy. I have also focused on trying to walk with him as much as I can, not only due to his health issues, but for my own health as well.
There are some days where I don't want to walk or exercise, but no matter what, I make sure I get my daily exercise, even if that means pedaling on an under desk exercise back for thirty minutes straight.
The New Heart for Life community helps keep me motivated in this regard. However, I feel like the community also inspires me to never give up on other things aside from just keeping fit. I am rather self conscious as an older college student, and I have taken 6 years to get my community college degree due to financial and educational struggles. While I'm working on getting my bachelor's degree in Mass Communications as swiftly as I can, it has taken me over 2 years to get my degree. This partially due to me deciding that my true passion in the workforce was not art, but instead, mass communications and marketing. When Dan had mentioned his recent college graduation after 20 years, I felt comforted. He had taught me that it is good to take life at your own pace and to not pressure yourself if you are not ready to graduate on time. This was another life lesson about recovery and resistance that I was grateful to see and hear about.
